READERS of the Derby Telegraph have been sharing their memories of a Birds bakery shop in Derby after news that it had closed down.
It was almost 100 years ago that three brothers returned from the First World War and founded Birds the Confectioners in Derby.
Today, it is a household name in the region, with 56 stores across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and East Staffordshire.

Victory Road, Derby: Man fighting for life in hospital after New...
A MAN fighting for his life in hospital after an alleged New Year's Eve fight was trying to break-up the incident, according to people living nearby.
Police cordoned off Maple Tree Court, Victory Road, yesterday and residents said forensic teams spent hours at the scene.
Officers said it was thought three people were involved and one man was taken to hospital.
A spokesman for the police said: "The man is sedated and in a critical condition. Witnesses should call 101."

Did you see someone jumping on the roof of a car in Derbyshire...
POLICE are investigating after a car in Derbyshire had its bonnet and roof damaged by someone jumping on it.
Officers said the Renault Trafic was parked in Annie's Close, Birchover, near Matlock, when it was targeted.
They said it appeared that someone climbed onto the bonnet roof and jumped up and down on it, causing "several deep dents" to the bodywork.
Police said the incident happened overnight between Monday, December 28 and the next day.

M1 crash: One lane closed after car hits central reservation
DERBYSHIRE drivers are being warned after a lane of the M1 was closed following a crash.
It happened on the northbound carriageway just before 1pm today.
A car crashed into the central reservation of the road near to junction 26 at Bulwell.
A spokesman for the Highways England said: "One lane was closed but it is not causing any congestion."A car crashed into the central reservation and is now awaiting recovery. Thankfully, no one was injured."

Paramedics, police and firefighters were called to Matlock, at about 1pm, where a man needed treatment.

Worker injured in Derby petrol station incident 'too scared to...
A WORKER who was injured in an alleged armed robbery at a Derby petrol station is "too scared to return to work", according to his friend and colleague.
Police said a member of staff suffered minor injuries during the incident, at the Texaco station in Traffic Street, just after midnight on Saturday.
Officers cordoned off the petrol station on Saturday morning as part of their investigation.

325 Derbyshire workers have lost their jobs at Leaderflush...
An MP says he has been told 325 Derbyshire workers have lost their jobs at a company which has a base in Langley Mill.
Amber Valley MP Nigel Mills said he has been told workers at Leaderflush Shapland were handed redundancy letters on New Year's Eve.
He said 82 people who work at the firm's Mansfield branch have also been told the same news.

Derbyshire traffic: Six vehicles involved in crash on the A52
Six vehicles were involved in a collision on the A52 in Derbyshire this morning.
Traffic was slow on the road coming into Derby after the accident at Spondon at 7.45am.
Drivers were queuing back to Borrowash while the road was cleared.
A spokeswoman for Derbyshire police said the incident didn't look "too serious" and that it was "just lots of little shunts".
