A SCULPTURE of 14 faces has come in for criticism after it emerged that the city council spent £18,000 on it during a time of cuts.
The artwork was put up at Derby's Speakers' Corner in the Market Place in a bid to draw more people "to exercise their democratic right for freedom of speech".
Each of the faces has a code underneath it that people can scan using their smartphones.

Temporary footbridge and road closures in Derby
A TEMPORARY footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists will open on Friday to allow the existing 135-year-old London Road Bridge to be demolished and replaced with a modern single-span bridge.
The pre-fabricated footbridge, which was installed in two 25-tonne sections by a 400-tonne crane positioned at the top of Litchurch Lane, sits alongside the old bridge and will be open for pedestrians and cyclists to use to travel along London Road from 1pm on Friday.

A DRIVER fleeing police who steered into a coned-off part of the A52, jumped a red traffic light and circled a roundabout the wrong way could have "maimed or killed" someone, a judge said.
Ryan Brocklesby had friends inside his black Audi who tried to persuade him to stop – but he continued for five minutes and a bus had to swerve to avoid a crash, a court heard.

A DRUG dealer was told by a crown court recorder to set a good example to his children and stop "smoking himself silly on cannabis".

Water bills set to rise £50 by 2020 for Severn Trent...
WATER bills for Severn Trent customers will rise by £50 over the next six years if its latest business plan is approved by the industry regulator.
The firm, which supplies the majority of homes and businesses in Derbyshire with water and sewerage services, submitted its final business plan to Ofwat yesterday.

THERE are no major problems on the main routes in and out of Derby this morning.
Caldwell Road in Cladwell, close to Swadlincote, is closed however at the Rosliston Road South junction due to a vehicle fire.

Derby City Council in bid to create new supermarket tax
BIG supermarkets could be charged a "levy" to top up local authority coffers, if "trailblazing" plans from Derby City Council come to fruition.
The authority is taking the lead on pushing for a new law that would allow councils to charge supermarkets a new tax on large sites.
If it was successful, the authority says the move could raise up to £1.64 million a year in Derby which could be used to protect services currently at threat from cuts.
