Derby needs to pull its socks up, wash its face, turn its fountain back on and, at the very least, put some lipstick on.And the only people who can help it do that are its own inhabitants. We can keep blaming the city council for the way our city looks until we are blue in the face but it's clear there are no quick fixes coming our way from this lumbering, bureaucratic beast anytime soon. I've seen dinosaurs run faster. Locked in red tape, protocol and an overriding need to have meetings and...

I am amazed at some of the nonsense reported in the Derby Telegraph over the assertion that our city is a "dump", "boarded up" or "soulless". Where are these people looking? Derby is a great place to live and work. Of course, it has suffered from some economic blight and there is a need to attract more investment but there is plenty to celebrate and enjoy. The Intu centre attracts millions of visitors and has promoted Derby's retail offer into a different...

The summer of '76 was so ridiculously, crazily hot that my parents vowed to run naked over the top of their hotel boat – the first of its kind in the country – when it finally rained. Did they? They claim they can't remember (how could you forget doing that?) but I wouldn't have blamed them if they had. Because, 40 years ago this month, the UK was basking in weather simply never witnessed before. And we've certainly never seen anything like it since. Yes, we've had the odd...

A pet has been mauled to death and a pensioner left with a broken leg after a savage dog attack in a Derbyshire field. Anne Edwards, 78, and her friend Keith Reedman, were walking in a field in Great Wilne, Shardlow, when a "mastiff-type dog" charged towards them, taking her six-year-old rescue dog, Millie, in his jaw and "shaking her around like a rag doll."
